The distinctive pattern of toe bones in the footprints is similar to the foot anatomy of birds today. Using only footprint evidence, Edward Hitchcock right from the beginning identified their makers as birds, or as birdlike. His interpretation holds up well today, as evolutionary connections between dinosaurs and birds are documented through other kinds of evidence too.
