Edward Hitchcock excavated footprints from the general area that is now the Dinosaur Footprints Site of the Trustees in Holyoke, Massachusetts. The type fossil for the Eubrontes footprint that Orra White Hitchcock illustrated for her husband’s first article on ornithichnology (“the study of fossil bird traces”) came from here. Paleontologists use type fossils as the means to identify similar fossils as belonging to one or another type or species.
