for you to address a reclamation to Dr Mantell and me, stating your view of the injustice of the statements in the Medals & of the deficiencies or errors of my note. This reclamation shall appear in my appendix to the present No. (it is too late for the regular pages already more than full) as was done some years ago in the case of Captain Basil Hall & more recently the case of Gauthony [?] & Dana’s. In reply to published errors or misstatements, it is proper to publish an address to the offending individuals before they have seen it.
Dr Mantell will thus have before him the means of making the 2d Ed. of his Medals correct, and I will take care that Dr Deane does not reply as there can be no occasion, it being not a revival of the controversy with him but a new overture to new facts. This proposed letter can be postponed till your communication & mine are forwarded, because the appendix can be printed & got ready as the last thing before putting on the address.
As to Dr Mantell or any one also having a prejudice against you (Dr D perhaps excepted), I know of nothing whatever to discountenance such an impression & I do not believe it. I will tell the printer to find you Dr Deane’s remarks on the tracks (quadrupedal); it is not at hand or I do not remember what it contains: I think he has done you justice.
