Dig Deeper

This three-quarter-profile vignette of Edward Hitchcock identifies him by name on the reverse. The photographer who copied the earlier image is noted as Langill of Hanover, New Hampshire. Howard H. H. Langill was a successful photographer who lived in Hanover for many years. Charles Hitchcock, the younger son of Edward and Orra, taught at Dartmouth College, in Hanover, from 1868 to 1908, so it is likely that he had Langill make this copy of a photograph of his father.
