Edward Hitchcock was buried in the West Cemetery in Amherst, Massachusetts. His gravestone reads:

Born May 24, 1793 / Pastor at Conway / President and Prof. at Amherst College / A Leader in Science, / A Lover of Men, / A Friend of God: / Ever Illustrating / the Cross in Nature / and Nature in the Cross / Died Feb. 27, 1864
