Octagon and Woods Cabinet

The Octagon at Amherst College was built in 1847-1848, its shape specifically requested by the college's president, Edward Hitchcock. The building housed the Woods Cabinet of scientific specimens and an observatory. In 1855, a geology classroom and gallery were added.
