Orra White's Mathematics Notebook

Orra kept this mathematics notebook in 1810, when she was 14 and not yet associated with Deerfield Academy. There are a few pages devoted to logarithms and "Chronological Problems", but she devotes the bulk of the notebook to calculating eclipses, a topic that also interested Edward Hitchcock at the same age. At the back of the notebook Orra copied excerpts from a speech by John Philpot Curran, entitled "Eloquence," about an adultery trial. Although she was young, her schooling included writing that was not only heavily religious and moral in tone, but on an adult theme.
